The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is one of the most spectacular and exciting regattas in the international yacht-racing calendar. Held annually in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, it is the ultimate test for the world’s most impressive monohull yachts – known in the sailing community as Maxis.
THE MAXI YACHT ROLEX CUP
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, is one of the highlights of the Mediterranean yachting season. Against the backdrop of the luxurious Costa Smeralda, a sizeable fleet of top-quality Maxi yachts gathers each September at the YCCS in Porto Cervo, Italy, for a week of intense competition off Sardinia. The regatta brings together the best skippers and crews with the most modern and powerful yachts of the moment. Rolex has partnered the regatta since 1985.
“Precision and excellence are requisites as the best skippers and crews are matched with the most modern and powerful yachts of the moment.“
The term “Maxi” derives from the maximum length racing yacht allowed under the international handicapping rule prevalent during the 1970s and 80s. Maxis remain impressive beasts, driving technological advancement as owners and designers strive to reduce weight while increasing power and performance. The definition of the class has changed with time. Design, construction techniques, materials and systems have evolved enormously and constantly, leading to progressively ambitious projects. And it can take up to 12 months for a highly experienced crew to fully adapt to a new yacht.
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2018
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2018 will pitch some of the world’s most imposing yachts in close competition. First held in 1980, the 29th edition will this year feature some 45 yachts, ranging in size from just over 18 metres (60 feet) all the way up to some 44 metres (144 feet). The crews commanding this impressive fleet will be of the highest calibre, exhibiting the requisite dedication, skill and finesse to manoeuvre powerful craft in the heat of a contest that will unfold on the spectacular waters of the Costa Smeralda from 2 – 9 September.
Rolex Yacht-Master 40
The Rolex Yacht-Master, the emblematic nautical watch, embodies the privileged ties between Rolex and the world of sailing that stretch back to the 1950s. Sleek, sporty and distinguished, the Yacht-Master is just as at home on the deck of a yacht on the open sea as on land in an elegant yacht club lounge.

“Attracting an impressive line-up of sailing power and prowess, the week-long event is regarded as an essential and inspirational annual rendezvous for innovators and early adopters of cutting-edge yachting technology.“
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was born to provide the largest, most powerful yachts of the day with an opportunity to compete directly in a suitably challenging environment. Continuing that philosophy, it is regarded as a showcase for the latest innovations and advances in design and technology. Maxi yachts have come a long way since the early days of the event and many of the yachts that race in Porto Cervo today are unrecognizable from their predecessors. Embracing the latest construction materials and techniques, while employing forward-looking thinking has led to a profusion of high-profile designs from futuristic Wallycentos, to Swan 115 Supermaxis, to fully customized racing boats.
The Supermaxi class is reserved for goliaths measuring upwards of 100 feet. From boats designed to both race and cruise, to those with speed as their single purpose, they reflect a continuing desire to set new benchmarks of power, comfort and elegance.
Supermaxis push the boundaries of knowledge and know-how of the world’s top designers, builders, equipment manufacturers, sailmakers and eventual crew. Seemingly ever bigger, ever more powerful designs are launched each year, as understanding of the possibilities presented by today’s materials and structural science continues to grow.
A crucial part of any yacht race or regatta is the expertise of the organizing body. Top class events featuring cutting-edge yachts and the foremost in international sailing talent demand the highest professionalism in race management. This approach is fully endorsed by Rolex, whose involvement in yachting is centred upon its privileged alliance with the most respected yacht clubs around the world. Its relationship with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda stands as one of its longest, stretching back over 30 years.
