Known for its expertise and excellence, Rolex has also devoted its love of watchmaking to material making. All the Rolex materials, together with its experts and their knowledge and innovations, are visible in every detail of this Swiss watch.
A Rolex watch must work perfectly and maintain its beauty even in the harshest environments. That is why Rolex uses Oystersteel to make several elements of its watch cases. Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family – superalloys that are commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries.
In 1985, Rolex became the first watchmaking brand to use a 904L stainless steel for the cases of all its steel watches. 904L steels are superalloys whose excellent anti-corrosion properties are comparable to those of precious metals. Specially developed by Rolex, Oystersteel is not only extremely resistant but also offers exceptional sheen. Rolex watches manufactured with this special steel retain their beauty even when exposed to the most extreme conditions.
Aesthetically, Oystersteel goes particularly well with 18 ct yellow or Everose gold on Rolesor (combination of gold and steel on a single watch) models.
The stuff of legends, precious and enduring, gold symbolizes perfection, purity and eternal brilliance. Noble metal par excellence, it adorns in all its splendour a wide range of watches in the Oyster collection.
Rolex gold is like no other. It is made of only the purest metals, meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment. These metals are alloyed by fusion in a crucible at over 1,000 °C, according to closely guarded formulas to produce the 18 ct yellow, white and Everose gold alloys specific to Rolex.
To preserve the beauty of its pink gold watches, Rolex created and patented a new alloy that it casts in its own foundry: Everose gold, which owes its unique colour – a pink hue unlike any other – to its composition. Introduced in 2005, it is used on all Rolex pink gold watches.
Rolesor – A marriage of gold and steel
Rolesor is the story of the auspicious meeting of two materials on a single Rolex watch: the juxtaposition of gold and steel with their contrasting colours and radiance, in subtly balanced harmony.
The name Rolesor was patented by Rolex in 1933, and has become one of the distinctive elements marking the brand’s watches, a true Rolex signature. The concept is simple: the bezel, the winding crown as well as the centre bracelet links are made of 18 ct yellow or Everose gold, whilst the middle case and the outer links of the bracelet are made of Oystersteel. white Rolesor models, the bezel alone is in 18 ct white gold.
Introduced on the Oyster Perpetual Datejust in 1948, Rolesor met with immediate success and contributed largely to the legendary status of this classic and distinctive wristwatch. Since that time, many other watches in the Oyster Professional and classic collections have appeared in Rolesor versions.
Precious stones and gem-setting
Rolex uses only the finest precious stones to adorn its watches: diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. The criteria and protocol for selecting these gems, which are always natural stones, are exceptionally demanding. Each gemstone is closely examined by the in-house gemmologydepartment, which ensures strict compliance with the specifications defined by the brand.
To guarantee the quality of the precious stones, Rolex gemmologists have a range of sophisticated analysis tools at their disposal, in addition to their own expertise. These tools – the same as those usually found in independent gemmology labs or even sometimes developed specially for Rolex – allow the specialists to examine the gemstones’ chemical composition and, for example, to confirm the authenticity of diamonds, which are systematically tested via X-ray imaging.
